National Renewable Portfolio Standard (NRPS). Sound like Greek? While it is quite a mouthful, it’s another one of the ways the up-and-coming Democratic Congress is planning to help boost the use of cleaner, alternative technologies. Legislation like the NRPS requires utilities to generate a certain percentage of electricity from renewable sources such as solar, wind and geothermal. As it stands now, less than 3 percent of the United State’s electricity comes from such sources. Think the lawmakers are dragging their feet? You can take some of the power into your own hands by electing to purchase blocks of wind or solar generated power. Yes, that’s right—bypass that dirty, coal-fire generated electricity.
