Living on the Edge

Wednesday January 31, 2007
Ford just unveiled a beauty—the world’s first driveable fuel cell hybrid electric plug-in. What’s that, you say? Well, it’s called the Ford Edge with HySeries Drive and it combines an onboard hydrogen fuel cell generator with lithium-ion batteries. Not only does this Edge offer zero emissions, but also a fuel economy range of 41 mpg—all the way up to 80 mpg (that’s in gasoline gallon equivalents, of course)—depending on the length of daily commutes.

What’s really cool about the Edge is that it uses a real-world version of the power plant that’s in the Ford Airstream concept from Detroit's North American International Auto Show that we recently covered. Ford has taken that futuristic concept and brought it down to earth in a vehicle that would work for the American family.

While the Ford Edge isn’t available for sale yet, we like this step that Ford has taken in helping to overcome the technological and financial hurdles of a hydrogen economy. It’s definitely a step in the right direction when we’re talking climate change and energy independence. Would you buy the Edge if it was available?
