Fill'er up...with Hydrogen
Wednesday March 7, 2007
Just last week, the United States officially opened its latest hydrogen filling station at the University of California in Irvine. In partnership with BMW and the U.S. Department of Energy (and launched by Air Products), the station lays yet another brick in the path to establishing a solid hydrogen infrastructure in this country. While initially limited to dispensing hydrogen in gaseous form, plans are in place for the addition of liquid refueling equipment by late 2007.
With a deep belief that hydrogen will one day replace petroleum as motor vehicle fuel, BMW has committed to begin establishing a vast hydrogen refueling infrastructure that will smooth the way for the transition to a hydrogen based economy. The company has further underscored its commitment to hydrogen by releasing its limited production 2007 Hydrogen 7 sedan for lease at select dealerships throughout the world.

Horray! We have made the first step towards creating a hydrogen infrastructure, albeit a small step. It is another brick in the path but one brick does not make a super highway. What other initiatives are in the works to dispense liquid hydrogen? There are other alternatives that can be considered as well that might be more effective, safer and less const prohibitive than cooling hydrogen to -400 degrees farenheit to liquify it.
