Green Machines

In 2003 there were 1,800 alternative fuel cars in London. Now: 14,000. Currently there are 10.5 million alternative fuel vehicles on American roads. And that's a jump of 22 percent over 2005 numbers. All in all, 2006 was a banner year for auto dealers selling alt fuel vehicles: totals topped out at 1.5 million--more than 500,000 more than industry projections. According to the Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers, this increase in sales was due to two things: public interest and variety of available vehicles. And that's a combination that can save you thousands--in dollars and carbon dioxide. Drive 60,000 miles in a Toyota Prius instead of a 6-cylinder truck like Pete Johnson, and save $5,600 and slash 13,000 pounds off your carbon dioxide contribution. Not bad, eh? Did you know there are currently 60 models of AFVs for your buying pleasure? That's compared with a skimpy 12 at the beginning of the decade, according to the Alliance.
Yes, the numbers are up ... and counting. From electric cars in Britain to companies offering employee bonuses for buying hybrids, the future is definitely looking greener. Wanna see what's available? Check out photos of the 2007 hybrids, the 2007 diesels, or our list of the top 10 alternative fuel vehicles for 2007. See anything you like? Don't forget about flex-fuel vehicles thirsty for E85, or the Honda GX--a real natural gasser.
What say you? Do you plan to buy an AFV anytime soon? Do you even like the choices available? We say let the manufacturers know what you think--and then put your money where your mouth is. You'll have the extra green to show for it.
