Electric Cars ... Electric Cars ... Electric Cars
Friday June 6, 2008
Thanks to you, loyal readers, for your emails to let us know about the many all-electric rides that are available. We've been researching, writing and collecting photos to update our '08 electric vehicle (EV) list, and it's time for the unveiling. Lots of folks are really into EVs--and with the price of fuel these days, that's not only understandable--it's smart. While battery range and charging are still watchwords, according to the US Bureau of Transportation Statistics, 90 percent of all automobile trips are single occupant, and the average round-trip commute is 20 miles. As you'll see, many of these cars can double and triple that on only one charge. And we loved this comparison in the Tango brochure: "Driving a traditional car to work instead of a Tango would be like driving a motor home across town to run an errand." Kudos to all the people and companies helping to bring zero emissions motoring closer to an affordable reality--that day is definitely on the horizon. Here's what's available in 2008 electric vehicles--which one on this list would you choose?

These “available today” lists are very misleading and confusing (no disrespect to the authors, because the EV websites are just as misleading and confusing). Take the list of 20 vehicles referred to in this article. If you
1) live in the USA (other than Calif.)
2) want one within the next 12 months
3) won’t settle for a LSV (golf-cart car that is limited to 25mph)
then you currently have just 2 choices: the ZAP Xebra and the NmG — neither being close to a practical alternative to the gas-powered car.
The good news is that progress is being made daily and the future is bright for EVs. Listen to the EVcast podcast (http://www.evcast.com) for daily updates on EVs being available in the US.
