Saving Detroit's Big Three: To Bail or Not to Bail
Monday November 17, 2008
Does anybody really want to see any of the Big Three fail? The U.S. economy is already in bad enough shape. Imagine the sharp uppercut to the chin it would take if a business that employs hundreds of thousands would go belly-up--the ramifications are alarming. But bailing them out courtesy of the Federal Government? Nobody is really in the mood for that either. It's a difficult situation to manage, and time is not on our side here, with the hole getting bigger by the day. So what do we do? Do we collectively say to the car companies, "You've made your bed, now lie in it" ... Do we the taxpayers float them a $25 billion loan? ... 50 billion? What are the implications of letting the Big Three go under?
