General Motors joined a partnership with BMW and, to some extent, Chrysler Group to develop the 2-mode hybrid system that is installed in these two full-size SUVs. Both the 2008 Chevrolet Tahoe Hybrid and the 2008 GMC Yukon Hybrid employ the unique electro-mechanical transmission/drive-line that resulted from the collaboration.
Driving each of these vehicles proved to be a win/win situation all-around--the handling was tight, acceleration was deeply satisfying from the 332 hp, 6.0-liter V-8. And the fuel mileage? 2008 EPA ratings put both the 2WD and 4WD in the 20-21 mpg range--and that's a 40 percent improvement over the standard models. The 2-mode hybrid system will be available with both gasoline and diesel engines and these vehicles will be available at dealerships during the fourth quarter of 2007. We predict that GM's got a winner in these two newest hybrid rides. GM has 16 more hybrids in the works for the next four years. Next up in 2008: Cadillac Escalade and Saturn Vue.
