Chrysler teamed up with General Motors and BMW to create the two-mode hybrid package. The nuts and bolts of the system consists of a transmission with fixed gear sets as well as two electric motors all housed within one unit. Depending upon load and/or speed conditions, the system can act as an electronic continuously variable transmission with high and low speed ranges, as well as employing four fixed gear ratios for power applications.
The first mode is designed for light load/low speed applications and can operate in three different ways:
- Electric motor power only
- Gasoline engine power only
- A combination of electric motor/gasoline engine
The second mode is designed primarily for high speed and towing operation: The engine is assisted by varying combinations of motors and gears for maximum torque. In addition, under certain situations, Chrysler's multi-displacement system can deactivate (shut-down) half of the engine's cylinders for maximum fuel efficiency.
