Ford has hit upon a winning combo in this popular hybrid that offers fuel efficiency and comfort in a compact SUV. With a list of new improvements for 2009, we're looking forward to getting behind the wheel and comparing it to our test drives of the 2008 Ford Escape Hybrid and 2008 Mercury Mariner. In the meantime, here's a preview of the new highlights:
New 2.5-liter I-4 Atkinson cycle engine with six-speed transmission. EPA fuel economy for FWD: 34/31 mpg and 4WD: 29/27 mpg.
A new engine processor provides smoother transitions between gas and electric vehicle modes, and new powertrain damping system reduces occupant vibrations.
Refined braking system with pedal sensor.
Escape Limited Hybrid: this new model features premium accents including 16-inch aluminum spoked wheels, exterior chrome (and interior ebony) accents, standard AM-FM/6-CD changer, luxury/convenience package (heated leather seats, power moonroof) and SecuriCode keyless entry.
Base price: $29,305
