The 2012 Tesla Model S all-electric luxury sedan is expected to be available beginning in the summer of 2012 with 5,000 vehicles being manufactured the first year of production. Tesla's advanced electric powertrain allows the car to go from 0 to 60 mph in just 5.6 seconds. The Model S is available with three battery configurations, resulting in three ranges. Based on an average speed of 55 mph, the ranges are as follows: 40 kWh battery, 160 miles; 60 kWh battery, 230 miles; and 85 kWh batterh, 300 miles. The Tesla Model S is expected to be a range leader among all-electric cars available in 2012. One of several unique features of the Model S: a roof that is entirely constructed of lightweight safety glass.
