Frequently Asked Questions: Alternative Fuels

Can I drive it in any weather?

Yes. The driving experience and foul weather precautions are much the same as in any regular vehicle. One area of special concern is the use of biodiesel (and biodiesel blends) in cold temperatures. Diesel fuel additives may be necessary to prevent biodiesel fuel gelling.

Is there any special maintenance required?

  • FFVs – They may require special lubricants; check the owner’s manual to make sure the correct engine oil is used.

  • Hybrids – No special maintenance is required—and maintenance might actually be reduced due to decreased wear and tear on the engine and brakes.

  • Propane & Natural Gas – The tanks that store the fuel require periodic inspection and certification. One plus: Some systems allow for extended maintenance schedules—check with the manufacturer.

  • Diesels & Biodiesels – None required. However, biodiesel has a cleansing/detergent effect, and if you’re using it for the first time on an older or higher mileage vehicle, a few extra initial fuel filter changes may be required due to the cleansing of sludge from the fuel system.

So why aren’t we all filling up with biodiesel or E85 and puttering around in clean propane and natural gas cars? What’s the deal?

It’s a slow process and the time of transition is now: Any new technology takes time to be known and accepted. The reasons are complex and varied, from political maneuverings and economics to infrastructure challenges. But even with these challenges, alternative fuels are gaining momentum and are here to stay—as with any new technology or product, the more demand, the product. Find out why it just may be easier than you think.
