It's ba-a-ck! Yes, General Motors (GM) is breathing life back into a new electric car, this time with a hybrid twist--the Chevolet Volt. While its cousin, the EV1, may be a not-too-distant memory, the Volt is a concept sedan that utilizes a lithium-ion battery that can power the car's electric motor for 40 miles of city driving. Recharge the battery by plugging it into a standard outlet and in six hours you're ready to go again.

For longer jaunts there's a one-liter, three cylinder gasoline engine that drives a generator to recharge the battery. And that's not all: The Volt doubles as a flex-fuel vehicle that can fuel up on E85--and other potential versions of the car could tout other creative propulsion systems such as fuel cells.

GM's family of electric propulsion systems, known as E-Flex Systems, certainly are offering to breathe some life into the memory of the EV1. Stay tuned for more. And in the meantime, check out the Chevrolet Volt Photo Gallery.
