Definition: The fuel consumption display gauge, in a vehicle's instrument panel, continuously displays the average fuel consumption of the vehicle over the course of a trip. To do so, it senses fuel flow rate over distance traveled, makes a calculation and then expresses it in miles per gallon or kilometers per liter. Though the calculations are continuous, the display is usually updated only every several seconds. Many vehicles also have an Instant fuel consumption display (IFCD).
