The Mercury Mariner Hybrid is the pricier upscale version of compact SUVs sold by Ford Motor Company. Included in this group are the Ford Escape Hybrid and, because of Ford's ownership stake in Mazda, the Mazda Tribute Hybrid. The 2008 Mariner has undergone design changes in both its styling (giving it a bolder, more authoritative look), and its hybrid drivetrain (software tweaks give it smoother transitions between engine and electric motor modes), as well as a new FWD-only option. Stripping off the extra weight and friction of the 4WD components yields a very appealing 6-7 MPG fuel savings.
