As many of you know, we love to crunch fuel economy numbers. No matter what the fuel—whether hybrid or not—keeping track of how much fuel a vehicle consumes not only helps the monthly budget but also gives insight into driving style and lightens the load on the environment. That’s why we were so excited to learn about FuelClinic.com. Here’s a website dedicated to helping you track your vehicle’s fuel economy—all you have to do it jot down your odometer mileage on your gas receipt when you fill up, plug it in online, and it’ll display changes, trends (are you remembering to eco-drive?), plus your average mpg on each tankful. Best of all, it's super easy-to-use.
And eco-driving is the key to significantly improving your mileage, week-over-week and month-over-month. A recent test, the Ford Focus ECOnetic Smart Driving Challenge, was conducted to see how much fuel, CO2 and money could be saved by eco-driving. The result? Miles per gallon were improved by 33.4 percent, CO2 impact by 22.5 percent, with an average yearly savings of about $600 (USA).
But even if you don’t have an individual driving coach in your vicinity, never fear. Take a few minutes to review our Top 20 Tips to Save Fuel (and sit beside Scott as he eco-drives), and then head over to FuelClinic.com and track your progress after each fill-up. Every little bit does indeed count—you just might be as surprised as Michael Bragg was when he learned he was spending over $3,000 per year on fuel. We had the opportunity to ask Michael (the mastermind behind FuelClinic.com) some questions recently. Read more about how FuelClinic.com got started.
