What is a valvetrain?

From Christine & Scott Gable, for About.com

Definition: The most common automotive engine type of all is the 4-stroke Otto cycle variety and this particular design uses a valvetrain. Depending upon the particular layout, the engine incorporates an arrangement of intake and exhaust valves, lifters, pushrods, rocker arms and camshafts. These components work together, both mechanically and hydraulically, to allow the engine to take in air and expel exhaust.
